A crochet hooker, that is. I only just restarted about five months ago, after a hiatus of about 21 years.
My mom was a crocheter, at least she made afghans a lot. I learned how from her and even made a baby blanket while I was preggers with The Beast. But I never used it because it was so nice, I didn’t want it to get messed up. I recently dug it out and am going to make some changes to give to my bff for her coming Bundle of Joy.
One of the reasons I quit crochet was that I never thought you could make much with it. I always though knitting was the way to go, since you could make nice sweaters.
With crochet, I thought you could only make shit like this …
Thankfully, the Internet came along and saved me. Pinterest is the greatest thing for crafters ever!
Caveat: I don’t think of myself as a “crafter.” That’s for bored housewives who make cutesy dish towels to change out with the seasons. I’m just someone who needs a hobby. I like to make things that people might actually want.
But since I’ve started crocheting again, I’ve made some pretty cool stuff. Mostly, amigurumi.
My latest project has been Easter bunnies. I bought the pattern from LuvlyGurumi on Etsy, and made several. A family friend even requested three for her grandchildren. I struggled to get them done before Easter, but I made it. I spent the Saturday before Easter at my dad’s house, surrounded by nieces and nephews while crocheting until my fingers nearly fell off.
But here they are …
They’re actually a whole lot easier to make than you’d think. But after you’ve made six of them, it gets a bit old. You might notice that two of them are fatter than the others. I’m sure it’s because I goofed somewhere. Who knows?
Here’s the first one I made …
I gave that one to The Jedi’s son, R2, who is 5. He named him Bunny Bear, and loves him.
I also made a brown one (rabbits are brown sometimes!) …
I don’t like this one as well, but my niece loves her. She named her Sarah. My sister says that’s what she named her other bunny, too.
I also used a different kind of yarn for the brown and it was crappy. Good yarn makes all the difference. And I don’t mean expensive. The yarn I usually use is called I Love This Cotton, sold at Hobby Lobby (I know, Hobby Lobby hates birth control and women, but it really is the best place to get yarn!)
I think the reason I like amigurumi is because they don’t take a long time to finish. I’m making a blanket for my niece, but it’s easy to get bored with that. And as a result, I’ve put it down for a while. Sigh. I’ll get back to it eventually.
Some others I’ve made (forgive the photo quality — taken with my phone)
Catnip mouse for the hellcat
My first attempt at amigurumi. Obviously, I did something wrong. We named him Uno because he’s the first of his kind. My oldest niece so sweetly claimed him.
This is closer to how he’s supposed to look. I still can’t get that beak right, though.
Baby hat. Too cute, I think.
That’s all for now. I’ll update with more as I make them.
